在那里,尊者舍利弗对比丘们说:"贤友比丘们!"那些比丘回应尊者舍利弗:"贤友!"尊者舍利弗如此说道:
"贤友们,具足五法的比丘,堪为同梵行者的对话者。哪五法呢?贤友们,在此,比丘自己戒行圆满,并且能够解答关于戒行圆满之说的问题;自己定力圆满,并且能够解答关于定力圆满之说的问题;自己智慧圆满,并且能够解答关于智慧圆满之说的问题;自己解脱圆满,并且能够解答关于解脱圆满之说的问题;自己解脱知见圆满,并且能够解答关于解脱知见圆满之说的问题。贤友们,具足这五法的比丘,堪为同梵行者的对话者。"第三。
164 共住经
在那里,尊者舍利弗对比丘们说:(中略)"贤友们,具足五法的比丘,堪为同梵行者的共住者。哪五法呢?贤友们,在此,比丘自己戒行圆满,并且能够解答关于戒行圆满之说的问题;自己定力圆满,并且能够解答关于定力圆满之说的问题;自己智慧圆满,并且能够解答关于智慧圆满之说的问题;自己解脱圆满,并且能够解答关于解脱圆满之说的问题;自己解脱知见圆满,并且能够解答关于解脱知见圆满之说的问题。贤友们,具足这五法的比丘,堪为同梵行者的共住者。"第四。
165 问问题经
在那里,尊者舍利弗对比丘们说:(中略)"贤友们,凡是向他人提问的人,都是基于五种理由,或其中之一。哪五种呢?
由于愚钝迷惑而向他人提问;由于恶欲、被欲望所驱使而向他人提问;由于轻蔑而向他人提问;由于想要了解而向他人提问;或者,以这样的心态向他人提问:'如果他被问到我的问题后,能正确地解答,那就好;如果他被问到我的问题后,不能正确地解答,那么我就为他正确地解答。'
贤友们,凡是向他人提问的人,都是基于这五种理由,或其中之一。而我呢,贤友们,是以这样的心态向他人提问的:'如果他被问到我的问题后,能正确地解答,那就好;如果他被问到我的问题后,不能正确地解答,那么我就为他正确地解答。'"第五。
166 灭尽经
在那里,尊者舍利弗对比丘们说:(中略)"贤友们,在此,比丘戒行圆满、定力圆满、智慧圆满,他能入想受灭定,也能从中出定——这是可能的。如果他在现法中未能证得究竟智(阿罗汉果),那么,超越以段食为食的诸天的共住处,投生到某一意生身中后,能入想受灭定,也能从中出定——这是可能的。"
如此说后,尊者优陀夷对尊者舍利弗说:"舍利弗贤友,这是不可能的,没有道理的。那位比丘超越以段食为食的诸天的共住处,投生到某一意生身中后,能入想受灭定,也能从中出定——这是不可能的。"
第二次(中略),第三次尊者舍利弗对比丘们说:"贤友们,在此,比丘戒行圆满、定力圆满、智慧圆满,他能入想受灭定,也能从中出定——这是可能的。如果他在现法中未能证得究竟智,那么,超越以段食为食的诸天的共住处,投生到某一意生身中后,能入想受灭定,也能从中出定——这是可能的。"
第三次尊者优陀夷对尊者舍利弗说:"舍利弗贤友,这是不可能的,没有道理的。那位比丘超越以段食为食的诸天的共住处,投生到某一意生身中后,能入想受灭定,也能从中出定——这是不可能的。"
于是尊者舍利弗心中想到:"尊者优陀夷已三次反驳我,而没有任何比丘表示赞同。我何不前去世尊那里?"于是尊者舍利弗前往世尊处;到达后,礼敬世尊,然后坐于一旁。坐于一旁的尊者舍利弗对比丘们说:"贤友们,在此,比丘戒行圆满、定力圆满、智慧圆满,他能入想受灭定,也能从中出定——这是可能的。如果他在现法中未能证得究竟智,那么,超越以段食为食的诸天的共住处,投生到某一意生身中后,能入想受灭定,也能从中出定——这是可能的。"

于是尊者舍利弗心中想到:"即使在世尊面前,尊者优陀夷也三次反驳我,而没有任何比丘表示赞同。我还是沉默吧。"于是尊者舍利弗沉默了。
于是世尊对尊者优陀夷说:"优陀夷,那么你认为意生身是什么呢?"(优陀夷说:)"世尊,是那些无色的、由想所成的天神。"(世尊说:)"优陀夷,愚者、无知者,你说的话有什么用呢!你竟然还认为自己应该发言!"
于是世尊对尊者阿难说:"阿难,竟然有人就这样旁观长老比丘被刁难而置之不理!阿难,竟然对正在被刁难的长老比丘没有一丝同情心吗!"
然后世尊对比丘们说:"比丘们,在此,比丘戒行圆满、定力圆满、智慧圆满,他能入想受灭定,也能从中出定——这是可能的。如果他在现法中未能证得究竟智,那么,超越以段食为食的诸天的共住处,投生到某一意生身中后,能入想受灭定,也能从中出定——这是可能的。"世尊如此说后,善逝从座位起身,进入住所。
于是,在世尊离去不久后,尊者阿难前往尊者优波婆那处;到达后,对尊者优波婆那说:"优波婆那贤友,在此有人刁难长老比丘们,我们对此竟然未能(出面维护)。优波婆那贤友,这不足为奇,世尊在傍晚从独处中出来后,就会以此事为话题而开示,正如他会对在那件事中对应之人——优波婆那尊者那样说的。我们现在已经生起了惭愧之心。"
于是世尊在傍晚从独处中出来后,前往侍者堂;到达后,在备好的座位上坐下。坐好后,世尊对尊者优波婆那说:
"优波婆那,具足多少法的长老比丘,为同梵行者所喜爱、所欢喜、所尊敬、所崇仰呢?"
(优波婆那回答:)"世尊,具足五法的长老比丘,为同梵行者所喜爱、所欢喜、所尊敬、所崇仰。哪五法呢?世尊,在此,长老比丘持戒(中略)受持学处而学习;多闻(中略)以正见善通达;善于言语,有美好的语调,具足文雅的语言,清晰、不含糊、能表达义理;对于四种禅那——属于增上心、现法乐住的,能随意获得、不难获得、无困难地获得;由于诸漏的灭尽(中略)亲自以证智实现后,成就而安住。世尊,具足这五法的长老比丘,为同梵行者所喜爱、所欢喜、所尊敬、所崇仰。"
(世尊说:)"善哉,善哉,优波婆那!优波婆那,具足这五法的长老比丘,的确为同梵行者所喜爱、所欢喜、所尊敬、所崇仰。优波婆那,如果长老比丘不具备这五法,同梵行者就不会恭敬他、不会尊重他、不会敬仰他、不会供养他——(即使)他头发花白、皮肤有皱纹。但是,优波婆那,正因为长老比丘具备这五法,所以同梵行者恭敬他、尊重他、敬仰他、供养他。"第六。

Atha kho bhagavā āyasmantaṃ udāyiṃ āmantesi– “kaṃ pana tvaṃ, udāyi, manomayaṃ kāyaṃ paccesī”ti? “Ye te, bhante, devā arūpino saññāmayā”ti. “Kiṃ nu kho tuyhaṃ, udāyi, bālassa abyattassa bhaṇitena! Tvampi nāma bhaṇitabbaṃ maññasī”ti! Atha kho bhagavā āyasmantaṃ ānandaṃ āmantesi– “atthi nāma, ānanda, theraṃ bhikkhuṃ vihesiyamānaṃ ajjhupekkhissatha Na hi nāma, ānanda, kāruññampi bhavissati theramhi bhikkhumhi vihesiyamānamhī”ti.
Atha kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi– “idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sīlasampanno samādhisampanno paññāsampanno saññāvedayitanirodhaṃ samāpajjeyyāpi vuṭṭhaheyyāpi– atthetaṃ ṭhānaṃ. No ce diṭṭheva dhamme aññaṃ ārādheyya atikkammeva kabaḷīkārāhārabhakkhānaṃ devānaṃ sahabyataṃ aññataraṃ manomayaṃ kāyaṃ upapanno saññāvedayitanirodhaṃ samāpajjeyyāpi vuṭṭhaheyyāpi– atthetaṃ ṭhānan”ti. Atha kho āyasmā ānando acirapakkantassa bhagavato yenāyasmā upavāṇo tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṃ upavāṇaṃ etadavoca– “idhāvuso upavāṇa, aññe there bhikkhū vihesenti. Mayaṃ tena na muccāma. Anacchariyaṃ kho, panetaṃ āvuso upavāṇa, yaṃ bhagavā sāyanhasamayaṃ paṭisallānā vuṭṭhito etadeva ārabbha udāhareyya yathā āyasmantaṃyevettha upavāṇaṃ paṭibhāseyya. Idāneva amhākaṃ sārajjaṃ okkantan”ti. Atha kho bhagavā sāyanhasamayaṃ paṭisallānā vuṭṭhito yena upaṭṭhānasālā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā paññatte āsane nisīdi. “Katīhi nu kho, upavāṇa, dhammehi samannāgato thero bhikkhu sabrahmacārīnaṃ piyo ca hoti manāpo ca garu ca bhāvanīyo cā”ti? “Pañcahi, bhante, dhammehi samannāgato thero bhikkhu sabrahmacārīnaṃ piyo ca hoti manāpo ca garu ca bhāvanīyo ca. Katamehi pañcahi? Idha, bhante, thero bhikkhu sīlavā hoti …pe… samādāya sikkhati sikkhāpadesu; bahussuto hoti …pe… diṭṭhiyā suppaṭividdhā; kalyāṇavāco hoti kalyāṇavākkaraṇo poriyā vācāya samannāgato vissaṭṭhāya anelagalāya atthassa viññāpaniyā; catunnaṃ jhānānaṃ ābhicetasikānaṃ diṭṭhadhammasukhavihārānaṃ nikāmalābhī hoti akicchalābhī akasiralābhī; āsavānaṃ khayā …pe… sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati. “Sādhu sādhu, upavāṇa! Imehi kho, upavāṇa, pañcahi dhammehi samannāgato thero bhikkhu sabrahmacārīnaṃ piyo ca hoti manāpo ca garu ca bhāvanīyo ca. Ime ce, upavāṇa, pañca dhammā therassa bhikkhuno na saṃvijjeyyuṃ, taṃ sabrahmacārī na sakkareyyuṃ na garuṃ kareyyuṃ na māneyyuṃ na pūjeyyuṃ khaṇḍiccena pāliccena valittacatāya. Yasmā ca kho, upavāṇa, ime pañca dhammā therassa bhikkhuno saṃvijjanti, tasmā taṃ sabrahmacārī sakkaronti garuṃ karonti mānenti pūjentī”ti. Chaṭṭhaṃ.
