“比丘们啊,有这四种人真实存在于世间。是哪四种呢?比丘们啊,在此,有某个人远离诸欲,远离不善法,有寻有伺,离生喜乐,进入并安住于初禅。他品尝那(禅悦),爱好那(禅悦),并因此获得满足。安住于此,致力于此,多住于此,不退转,当寿命尽时,投生到梵众天中。比丘们啊,梵众天的寿命为一劫。在那里,凡夫住满其全部天寿,耗尽那些天众的整个寿命期限后,会堕入地狱,或堕入畜生道,或堕入饿鬼界。然而,世尊的弟子在那里住满其全部天寿,耗尽那些天众的整个寿命期限后,就在那存在中完全涅槃。比丘们啊,这就是差别,这就是意图,这就是已闻法的圣弟子与未闻法的凡夫之间的差异之处,即在于有(不同的)趣向和投生。
“再者,比丘们啊,在此,有某个人止息了寻和伺,内心清净,心专一性,无寻无伺,定生喜乐,进入并安住于第二禅。他品尝那(禅悦),爱好那(禅悦),并因此获得满足。安住于此,致力于此,多住于此,不退转,当寿命尽时,投生到光音天中。比丘们啊,光音天的寿命为二劫。在那里,凡夫住满其全部天寿,耗尽那些天众的整个寿命期限后,会堕入地狱,或堕入畜生道,或堕入饿鬼界。然而,世尊的弟子在那里住满其全部天寿,耗尽那些天众的整个寿命期限后,就在那存在中完全涅槃。比丘们啊,这就是差别,这就是意图,这就是已闻法的圣弟子与未闻法的凡夫之间的差异之处,即在于有(不同的)趣向和投生。

寻、伺 : 禅定中的两种心所,寻是粗的注意力投向,伺是细的持续观察。
离生喜乐: 由离欲(远离)而产生的喜悦和快乐。
梵众天: 色界初禅天的第一层天。
光音天: 色界二禅天的第三天。
遍净天: 色界三禅天的最高天。
果實天/广果天: 色界四禅天的第三天,是凡夫能投生的最高色界天。
净居天: 色界五净居天,只有证得不还果(阿那含)的圣者才能投生于此。
四无量心: 慈、悲、喜、舍四种广大的心境。
身坏命终: 死亡。
涅槃/般涅槃: 熄灭烦恼,脱离生死轮回。
凡夫 : 未证得任何圣果的普通人。
